A Study on the Effects of Health Education in parasite Control Program in Elementary Schools

Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of health education at elementary school on parasite problems. 1,389 students were studied during the period of May 16 to July 21 1973. The following conclusions were obtained as a results of this study;
1. The possibilities of reinfection after parasite is controled, the rate who believed that reinfection did not occur when parasite is once controled was 43.5% at beginning and it was 63.1% after health education performed. The rate of those who believes the infection of parasite could be prevented by 56.2% at beginning to 38.2% after health education while it showed slight change among control group.
2. The rate of those who believes the infection of parasite could be prevented by vaccination decreased from 56.2% at base line survey to 38.2% after health education performed while it showed slight change among control group.
3. As a result of health education, the attitude toward parasite infection was changed. 27.2% of the respondents answered afraid of parasite at beginning and two-thirds (68.1%) of the felt serious about parasite while it did not change among control group.
4. The collection rate of stool specimen was increased from 86.7% at the first collection to 90.4% at the second collection which was done after health education performed.
5. Health education was effective on the changing habit of finger sucking. The rate of finger sucking students was reduced from 19.1% to 11.3% among health educated group while it was from 18.2% to 17.4% among control group.
6. The rate of hand washing habit after defecation was increased from 70.1% to 92.0% among educated group while it showed slight change from 67.1% to 70.5% among control group.
